"Left to Leaving" 2024
Everything standing between you and leaving.
Poetry installation shown at the Institut Fur Alles Mogliche in Berlin Germany in a group exhibition alongside 15 other artists titled "and other objects" after a two week residency.
Mya's work explores the intersections of place, identity, and imagination, drawing inspiration from sci-fi, myth, and truth. As a photographer, videographer, and journalist, she uses her lens—both literal and figurative—to question and document the world around her. In a state of discovery, she navigates a sense of belonging while grappling with the weight of the future.
Through a balance of humor and seriousness, Mya invites viewers into spaces where parody and introspection coexist. Some pieces challenge conventions through playful critique, while others delve into deep personal reflections on the landscapes of her mind and reality.

Are parts of Africa being colonized by China under the guise of development?
Africa and China have rich, interconnected histories, with moments of solidarity like the 1955 Bandung Conference, where Asian and African nations united to discuss peace and independence during the Cold War. This cultural exchange continues to inspire art, as explored in Dr. Joan Kee’s SAIC lecture, Capitals of Afrasia, which highlighted artistic interpretations of Afro-Asian connections.
Yet, in recent years, China has substantial investments in Africa—such as the $10 billion development transforming Bagamoyo into Africa’s largest port—raise questions about neo-colonialism. While these projects promise progress, they also provoke concerns about the long-term impact on local communities.
This piece invites viewers to reflect on the balance between development and sovereignty, the beauty of land and its structures, and the costs of progress.
